Strangers learn together in wired language classes - HANNAH NEWTON, Times Herald

Preston Smith has gone to summer school for the past month with a group of about 40 kids he has yet to meet in person. The Marysville 5-year old is part of the summer school Spanish class at the St. Clair County Intermediate School District. He is in a classroom at the ISD, but students from school buildings in Emmett, Marine City and Fort Gratiot participate via distance learning, which means images and sound from each classroom are transmitted through computer cameras by satellite to each site. The program, which also includes French classes, is in its final week. The students will meet for the first time Friday.
