Unique High-Tech Academy Plans Groundbreaking Today - Shane Johnson, The Salt Lake Tribune

Utah's first high-tech high school is one State Board of Education stamp of approval away from reality. For 250 incoming freshmen and sophomores from across the Salt Lake Valley, the Academy for Math, Engineering and Science (AMES) promises a rigorous path of university-level courses in such subjects as biotechnology and robotics. AMES Principal Al Church said state approval of the academy's charter likely will come Friday. He and other school supporters are so confident of board approval they are planning a groundbreaking ceremony -- with Gov. Mike Leavitt and AMES business partners, board members and students -- today, three days before the school is officially chartered. If approved, AMES will open its doors this fall, the first of six technology-intensive public magnet schools to open since Leavitt announced his New Century High School Initiative in early 2002.
