Net boosts literacy - HEATHER WRIGHT, Dominion Post, New Zealand

Kids are taking to the Internet in an effort to boost literacy following an initiative from community development charity Project Awhi. A trial of an online school has been completed in Auckland's East Tamaki and Project Awhi is now gearing up to roll out to five sites – two in Northland, Matamata, Taumaranui, and one in the South Island. Project Awhi has been targeting illiteracy in South Auckland for six years through after-school literacy projects. Project Awhi operations manager Mike Usmar says the move online enables the charity to reach wider numbers of children. Developed by Auckland's NetDesign, the site enables students to access an online teacher via videoconferencing, whiteboard and chat facilities, while working through study material, homework and reading programmes.
