North teacher provides lessons explosive for students - Tom Giffey, Leader-Telegram Staff
Talk about a textbook concept like conservation of momentum in a dry lecture, and you might get blank looks from teenagers. Blow up a firecracker to demonstrate the same principle, and you’ll likely get their attention. That’s what Jim Schmitt did, and the explosion -- safely controlled, of course -- was noticed by more than just his North High School physics students. In fact, the momentum from Schmitt’s demonstration helped propel the teacher all the way to Washington, D.C.
