OutlawNet is an ISP in Sisters, Oregon, serving 500 users. It's also a hands-on tech class at the local high school - Lindsay Martell, Tech Live
The town of Sisters, Oregon (population 911), is too small for a fast-food restaurant, but it's big enough for its own Internet service provider (ISP). The town can thank a visionary at Sisters High School by the name of Jon Renner. Fed up with dialing to Salem -- the state's capital -- just to get AOL, Renner received a $50,000 donation and founded OutlawNet in 1996. He's now the CEO. Situated in a corner of a former art room at Sisters High School, the ISP shares a home, and the name, of the school's renegade mascot, the Outlaws. "I'm a social studies teacher, but I also wanted to use the Internet as a social studies teacher, and I couldn't see any other way to do it other than to stand up and make it happen," Renner said.
