Web Classroom Keeps Snowed-In Fourth-Graders Connected - S. Mitra Kalita, Washington Post

For a handful of students at Canterbury Woods Elementary School in Annandale, all learning was not lost in last week's string of snow days. Thanks to a tech-savvy teacher, they were able to log into a virtual classroom and learn new concepts, review old ones, solve problems and take quizzes. Of course, they did it between sledding and making snow angels, watching videos and drinking hot chocolate. "At first, I was unsure," said Tommy, 10. "Then, when I got on that first day, it was really fun. . . . I thought it was more fun because you could do it at home." His teacher, Aron Sterling, came up with the idea on the first snow day, figuring students wouldn't be back soon. As it turned out, Fairfax County public schools and many other districts were closed all week. So each night, after school cancellations were announced again, Sterling sent an e-mail to everyone on his class list and asked them to log into the district's Web site at a certain time the next day.
