Tombstone school board OKs agreement for home-school program - Bill Hess, Herald/Review
The Tombstone school board has unanimously decided to enter into a long-distance intergovernmental agreement with an Alaska school district to establish a learning program for home-schoolers. Before making the decision, which was based on the school board's yearlong study of the idea, Jim Foster, assistant superintendent of Galena City School District in Alaska, told the five board members that they would run into opposition from a number of areas, including the Arizona Department of Education.... While the Galena district has fewer than 200 students attending school in regular classroom settings, it provides support to 4,300 students through an Internet system as part of its distance-learning program, Foster said. The Alaskan distance-learning program reaches 3,600 students in Alaska and 700 students in South Korea and Japan. The program began with 1,100 students six years ago.
