Valley students get challenged with UC college prep courses online - Jim Steinberg, The Fresno Bee
Mirian Torres, 18, a senior at Laton High School, studies for the semester exam in an advanced-placement English literature class in the school's library. High school students can take advanced courses in diverse areas through University of California's College Prep Initiative. Mornings at 8, senior Mirian Torres studies English literature and composition in her advanced-placement class at Laton High School, working to earn college credit. She has never met her instructor. Torres attends the college-preparatory course by computer, turning in essays about Shakespeare, Frost and other writers to an instructor who, she believes, lives in Washington state.
