New design, technology in school with taxpayers - PATRICIA PARENTE

When it comes to building today's high schools, gone are the familiar boxy structures with rows of classrooms that may have left students feeling a little like they were headed to jail each day. Today, schools are incorporating more open space into their design plans so students can mingle between classes and congregate. And because schools are being thought of more as public facilities that needn't be locked up every afternoon after the buses roll out, school districts are paying more attention to the community's needs as well. Instead of libraries that house only dusty old books, districts are building interactive "media centers" with state-of-the-art technology that can be used by residents at night.
