Learning in River City - techLearning

A current NSF project may result in better learning opportunities, especially for students who struggle along at the bottom of the class. Led by Chris Dede, a Harvard professor, the aim of the project is to find an engaging ways to teach science, drawing on curiosity and play. The twist is that this learning goes on in "multi-user virtual environment experiential simulator" (MUVEES), created using the same technology used to design popular online fantasy games. Students interact in the 3-D virtual world of River City, where they try to find out why its citizens are plagued by various illnesses. Communicating via instant messaging, and getting clues from computer-generated "avatars" that represent the citizens of the town, learners are challenged to use experimental design to find the solution. http://www.virtual.gmu.edu/muvees/index.htm
