St. Paul schools reject grant money from Gates because of restrictions - JOHN WELBES, Pioneer Press

As a substantial chunk of Bill Gates' grant money sat within their schools' reach, some teachers in St. Paul decided the cash came with too many strings attached. Staff at Central and Como Park high schools this fall decided not to seek the high-profile grants that would have helped set up small learning communities in their schools. It's rare for anyone to turn down the Microsoft billionaire's money, but some teachers say signing on with Gates would have buried them under larger workloads and done nothing to fix their most pressing problem: big classes.
