Online race line: The digital divide - Carole Carlson, Post-Tribune staff writer
The chasm that separates Northwest Indiana is more than just black and white. It’s also dot and com. The digital divide in Northwest Indiana is felt acutely in urban areas like Gary, Hammond and East Chicago where fewer folks are navigating information superhighways in their homes because they don’t own computers. Northwest Indiana is a microcosm of the rest of the nation. A U.S. Census Bureau survey taken last year revealed that 83 percent of white children lived in a house with computers compared to 46 percent of black children. Only 25 percent of the black children were connected to the Internet compared to 50 percent of white children.
