Chicago schools lag on computers

Students and teachers in Chicago have less access to computers than the national average, and those computers that are available end up serving as little more than expensive typewriters and encyclopedias, according to a study released Tuesday. "Overall, the use is at a fairly rudimentary level. There is lots of word processing and research on the Internet, which are low-level uses," said Holly Hart, an author of the report by the Consortium on Chicago School Research, a federation of researchers at the University of Chicago. The findings mirror a national problem as schools become wired. Even if classrooms get the necessary electrical upgrades and hardware, numerous studies have shown that teachers are not getting the training to use computers creatively and effectively....
