Technology in Education 2002: MDR's annual survey

"Technology in Education 2002," from Market Data Retrieval, is the latest report in the company's ongoing monitoring of school technology use. Ninety-four percent of schools report Internet access, closely followed by 90% using LANs and 76% with high-speed Internet access. WANs are found in 67% of schools. Newer technologies such as laptops are in 40% of schools, 30% have DVD drives installed on at least some computers, 15% have wireless networks, and 7% provide handheld computers to teachers. Overall, U.S. public schools reported having 12.7 million instructional computers in 2002, up 12% from 11.3 million in 2001. The ratio of students per instructional computer has improved from 7 to 1 in 1997 to slightly less than 4 to 1 in 2002. ...
