Teaching Fast Track To Widen - Technology, Home Science To Be Added

State officials are expected to approve programs today to address shortages of teachers in technology education and in family and consumer science, subjects once known as industrial arts and home economics. The Board of Governors for Higher Education is expected to vote on adding the two subjects to a fast-track training program that licenses new teachers after 22 weekends of course work. The popular Alternate Route to Certification program trains teachers over the summer and on weekends, qualifying them for licenses to teach English, history, mathematics, science and other subjects.... The state has identified education technology as one of several areas with critical teacher shortages....
