Fertile Valley Bridges Divide

The rural community of Watsonville, California, is home to rich soil and verdant farms that produce some of the country's best artichokes, brussel sprouts and apples. It's also home to the predominantly poor and Latino workers who toil in those fertile fields. Farm workers spend more time navigating through strawberry plants than they do the World Wide Web, but now a new program is helping them gain computer skills, letting them keep up with their school-age children.... "The focus (is) making sure that low-income and Latino communities have access to training and equipment that they need in the digital age, whether that be through education or employment," said Ana Montes, LIF's technology director. R-TIP funds have brought computers to the Alianza Charter School computer lab and the Watsonville community center. "We identified a particular community, a particular school, and teachers at this school who are really interested in the program," Montes said. "We do extensive outreach to parents, and (the tech staff at the University of California) Santa Cruz trains the teachers." ...
