TAMPA - Virtual school, where students and teachers communicate online, has been something of a novelty. Not anymore. With summer classes axed across Florida, the state's online high school suddenly is overflowing, and officials are seeking money to serve thousands of waiting students. In Hillsborough County, the timing couldn't be better. This week, the school district becomes one of only three in Florida licensed to use online courses for its own programs. Hillsborough will start with summer school, followed in August by a full, year- round magnet program based at Blake High School and paid for by a federal grant. ``This reflects a new style of learning,'' said MaryEllen Elia, Hillsborough's director of nontraditional programs. ``It gives students another way of meeting requirements for a diploma.'' The concept of high school students learning online has been a bit abstract for many, although Florida Virtual School started under another name in the academic year 1996-97, said its chief marketing officer, Victoria Zepp. Now, with at least half the state's school districts not providing summer classes, ``we're like the saving grace,'' she said....
