Girls encouraged to enroll in tech classes - Schools face obstacles in getting more into field dominated by men

When Alison Luedtke first took technology education at Hartford Union High School, she was the only girl in the class. Even though she was also one of the best at handling tools, her expertise cut no ice with her male classmates. Ninety-six percent of the high schoolers taking advanced automotives last year were boys . . . 94% of those enrolled in advanced construction were boys. Eighty-two percent of those enrolled in parenting classes were girls, as were 75% of those taking choir. "As long as I can remember, I've run a drill press," said Alison, now 16 and a junior. "I knew what I was doing, but none of them would ask for help. They'd ask other guys for help. They wouldn't ask a girl." With manufacturers around the state desperate for more skilled workers, districts such as Hartford are boosting efforts to persuade more girls to sign up for technology education classes....
