Ubiquitous Wi-Fi Access Over the AC Power Grid? - Mark Long, e-inSITE
Amperion, Inc. has unveiled new PowerWiFi access technology for combining the pervasive infrastructure of power lines with readily available 802.11 (WiFi) technology. PowerWiFi is a standards-based Amperion technology that links the power line network to customers via an 802.11b connection. The 802.11 device located at each subscriber site can either link directly to a computer/computers; to an Ethernet LAN; to premise-based wireless networks; or to in-home PLC using Homeplug technology.... The reach of Wi-Fi and the fact that medium-voltage power lines are located within a few hundred meters of every home and business, combine for a unique cost effective and pervasive service architecture. Amperion's medium voltage Powerline technology has been designed for integration with a number of other access technologies, including low voltage-Powerline, HomePlug standardized hardware, and DSL.
