The writing is on the wall: Blackboards are history - Michel Marriott, New York Times

... Today, digital technology is broadening the concept of the blackboard to that of a large educational window. Here are some of the latest variations of the old-fashioned board: Writing on the wall: Designed for interactive business meetings, 3M's Digital Wall Display, a 60-inch (66-centimeter) multiple-function whiteboard, is finding its way onto campuses - although slowly, partly because of its $13,000 price. The board shows whatever is written on it, as well as anything - text, charts, still and moving pictures - stored in a computer plugged into it. With a remote mouse, teachers can edit and move the material around on the touch-screen board. All of this, including audio, can be transmitted almost instantaneously to other units anywhere in the world, making it useful for long-distance learning. Faculty members at the Yale University School of Management are using the system to share research with colleagues.
