IT Breaks Out of the PC Box - Lisa Gill, NewsFactor Network
Will the push to meld PC functionality with consumer electronics devices relegate PC chip innovation to the back burner? When Microsoft chairman Bill Gates unveiled the software giant's newest Internet-enabled consumer products -- dubbed smart devices -- at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, one thing was clear: The PC may find itself in a supporting role in the near future. Gates displayed "smart" watches and also promised key chains, alarm clocks and even refrigerator magnets that can access Web-based information and receive messages.
