University networks getting stuffed - JUSTIN POPE, AP Business Writer
With each click of his mouse, Harvard sophomore Mathias Crawford moves deeper into a virtually limitless library of free movies, TV shows and DVDs -- and drives the entertainment industry batty. "The programs just make it so easy to use this stuff," Crawford says, skimming over lists of the latest Austin Powers and Star Wars movies. The files live on other people’s hard drives but could, in seconds, be summoned to the one in Crawford’s dorm room over Harvard’s powerful computer network.... Universities are in a bind. Let such services run rampant, and risk the wrath of the entertainment industry and clogging their networks. But by clamping down too much, they risking intruding on the rights of students.
