The Digital Divide or the Digital Connection: A U.S. Perspective - Beverly P. Lynch
The concept of the digital divide grows more complex as the phrase becomes a shorthand for every conceivable disparity relating to online access. The multi-dimensionality of the concept has been framed by Pippa Norris into three distinct aspects: Global divide - divergence of Internet access between industrialized and developing countries; Social divide - gap between information rich and information poor in each nation; and, Democratic divide - difference between those who do and those who do not use the new technologies to further political participation [1]. This paper emphasizes the digital divide in its social aspects in the U.S. and pays particular attention to the role of the library in furthering equity of access to information.
