At Brown, in the urban studies department, the geology department, Brown Police and the Swearer Center, people are using or developing GIS maps for research and training. A GIS map turns complex geographic data into an interactive tool. “Instead of just looking at a table full of numbers, you can see it mapped out,” said Lynn Carlson, systems manager for the Department of Geology. “This map isn’t static — you can ask it questions.”...
