GIS maps: the researcher’s new best friend

...In the past decade, Global Information System mapping technology has become popular as a versatile tool for graphically presenting and analyzing geographic information. At Brown, in the urban studies department, the geology department, Brown Police and the Swearer Center, people are using or developing GIS maps for research and training. A GIS map turns complex geographic data into an interactive tool. “Instead of just looking at a table full of numbers, you can see it mapped out,” said Lynn Carlson, systems manager for the Department of Geology. “This map isn’t static — you can ask it questions.”...
