When Hiral Patel wants to check his e-mail, the college freshman fires up his laptop at the school's student union, the library or another spot on campus. With a couple of mouse clicks, the computer engineering major from Elk Grove is logged onto the California State University, Sacramento, network. "I can check e-mail, lecture assignments, do homework or work on programs," he said. Nothing unusual in this except Patel never connects his laptop to an Internet cable. All the data is beamed to his computer, meaning he can log on anywhere at CSUS where a signal is available – from a plush couch in the student union to a classroom in the science building....
