John Haystead, Contributing Editor, CommVerge As any audiophile will tell you, the design of a truly impressive sound system starts with the speakers—the elements closest to the ear. Likewise, the design of systems intended to communicate visual information should begin with the display. Regardless of the quality of data available or the sophistication of the processing system employed, displays must efficiently present visual information to the human eye in order to communicate successfully. And as product teams know all too well, displays must accomplish this feat within power, space, and cost constraints that are often claustrophobic. These truths are clearly not lost upon the members of the display industry, who are hard at work perfecting eye-popping technologies for everything from the largest HDTV to the smallest cell phone. The recent Society for Information Display (SID) conference, held in Boston, presented an opportunity to browse these innovations.
