'Cell' Supercomputing Chip Closer to Completion

Analysts said the tricky part will be to develop software, applications and operating systems that can exploit Cell's power and flexibility. The initial design phase for IBM's mysterious new chip architecture, known as Cell, has ended and is now in the hands of engineers, company officials said on Wednesday. A joint project of IBM, Toshiba and Sony, Cell is expected to yield a chip that is capable of performing mathematical calculations of one teraflop -- over one trillion calculations per second. That is more than 100 times faster than a 2.5 GHz Pentium 4 processor....
