Intel gearing up to roll out Itanium 2 processor

SAN FRANCISCO (REUTERS) - Intel Corp. may be hoping the second time is the charm for its Itanium 2 chip. Rolling out next week, according to analysts, the processor is designed to run high-end computer servers with the aim of giving Intel a larger piece of a lucrative market now dominated by rival Sun Microsystems Inc. Intel's first foray into a so-called 64-bit chip -- one that crunches data in chunks of 64 bits compared with the 32-bit chunks found in personal computer processors -- fell a bit flat, analysts said. Coming out last May, Itanium was months late, there weren't enough software programs written for the first Itanium chip, and enterprise computer users typically are averse to wholesale change to a new type of processor, analysts said....
