The broadband market is limping along amid ongoing economic trials and tribulations. Both DSL and cable providers want to recoup their investments in high-speed infrastructure. But that desire has crashed headlong into reluctance on the part of consumers to spend $50 a month for what's considered a luxury. Yet for every person resolving to make do with a 56K modem, someone else in a broadband-challenged community is chomping at the bit to attain more bandwidth. Believers remain convinced that this pent-up demand will soon spell recovery—even prosperity. And they foresee advanced services driving the next wave of consumer broadband adoption....
