Pipe expansion - IEEE finalizes 10-Gbit Ethernet standard
Margot Suydam, Technology Editor

With Ethernet creeping out of the LAN into the MAN (metropolitan area network) and the WAN, there’s been a continued drive toward an ever bigger pipe. Well, the world of Ethernet communications just got faster, as well as more connected. On June 13, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Standards Board approved IEEE 802.3ae, "Media Access Control Parameters, Physical Layers, and Management Parameters for 10-Gbit/sec Operation." The 802.3ae standard extends the speed of Ethernet operations to 10 Gbits/sec and makes provisions for linking Ethernet LANs. The standard reflects Ethernet's ongoing evolution toward higher speed as network and Internet traffic continue to expand dramatically....
