Appalachia lags in telecommunications, study finds

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (July 10, 2002 9:43 a.m. EDT) - Appalachia has been left out of the telecommunications revolution, with a shortfall of computers, Internet access and worker skills holding back technology gains in the mostly rural region, a federal study shows. The study, conducted by two University of Texas professors, was commissioned by the Appalachian Regional Commission to gauge the availability and use of telecommunications in the 200,000-square-mile region....
