Thomas Jefferson ordered the first great American mapping project. In 1803, he gave captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark a check for $38,000 and told them to gather a project team, head west, and expand US commercial trade routes. Nearly two centuries later, we're still looking at ways to develop commercial trade routes. However, a mapping project underway today will involve an entirely different kind of uncharted territory—one that is completely digital. This new project is a twofold endeavor. First, generate a geographical and topological picture of Internet connectivity.
