Wait and see: Higher Speed Variants of DSL

The broadband market is limping along amid ongoing economic trials and tribulations. Both DSL and cable providers want to recoup their investments in high-speed infrastructure... Cable operators have long been busy upgrading their plants from analog to digital in preparation. On the telco side of the fence, several technologies exist that improve on today's DSL with higher speed and/or symmetric bandwidth. In conversations with vendors of DSL semiconductors and equipment, it's apparent that these new technologies—namely SHDSL (symmetric high-speed DSL) and VDSL (very-high-speed DSL)—are technically mature. But carriers still have to wrestle with essential market-related questions like where, when, and how to deploy them....
