http://www.cnn.com/2002/TECH/industry/05/16/bionic.retina.idg/index.html Bionic retina may hold hope for the blind Jon Surmacz On May 8, Dr. Alan Chow, a pediatric ophthalmologist, revealed data from a two-year clinical trial of the Artificial Silicon Retina (ASR) -- a device he and his brother Vincent conceived more than 10 years ago to help victims of retinitis pigmentosa (congenital diseases that affect the light-sensing cells of the retina). The news, picked up by Reuters and Good Morning America among others, was that the implanted retina was able to restore some vision in all six test subjects. In a healthy eye, the photoreceptor cells transform the light that reaches the retina into an electrochemical signal that is sent to the brain. That signal is interpreted as sight....
