http://www.e-insite.net/commvergemag/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=CA215811&spacedesc=news Breaking The Internet Bottleneck Mark Long -- e-inSITE Satellite operators from around the world are betting the bank that their next-generation broadband satellite platforms will be able to break the Internet bottleneck once and for all. Scheduled for launch beginning later this year, these new spacecraft will all operate in the Ka-band frequency spectrum, with Internet downloads sharing the 18.3 to 20.2 GHz "downlink" band and multimedia uploads using the 28.35 to 30 GHz "uplink" band. Down on the ground, end-users will employ two-way terminals that will operate in the USA under a blanket licensing procedure adopted by the FCC two years ago, which will allow the fledgling Ka-band satellite operators to license all of their respective ground terminals on behalf of their subscribers. The following article presents an overview of the Ka-band multimedia delivery systems that are looking to achieve liftoff within the next two years. (For an up-to-date list of the Ka-band satellite platforms and orbital assignments that have already received FCC licensing, see the companion article "All the Right Moves .")...
