Hard drive makers are being challenged to produce physically smaller drives despite cost reductions that have hampered research and development efforts, said Western Digital's Darrin Bulik. With the proliferation of media and wireless accessories, DVD burners and sleek screens, it is easy to overlook the lowly PC hard drive. But this central component of computers is quietly evolving into the "digital closet" of the future, capable of storing more music and files and supporting more complex software than ever before. In addition, analysts told NewsFactor, while hard drives are likely to offer more storage capacity, particularly for consumers, they must decrease in size to fit into a world of smaller PCs and mobile computing...
