Internet Use Among People with Disabilities On the Rise

Internet use by people with disabilities is increasing at twice the pace of other Americans - but this population still is catching up, according to information gathered for the National Organization on Disability (N.O.D.) by Harris Interactive (the Harris Poll). In 2001, about 38 percent of adults with disabilities used the Internet at home, more than five times the seven percent who were online in late 1998. Over the same period, use among the non-disabled doubled from 26 to 56 percent. "If Internet use by persons with disabilities continues at the same growth rate, it should match the rate of other users in a few years," said N.O.D. Senior Research Advisor Gerry Hendershot, Ph.D. "However, at this time there remains a very notable 18 percentage point gap that must be closed so Americans with disabilities benefit fully and equally from the opportunities the Internet provides."...
