Because of its cost structure, the old Iridium needed a million subscribers or more to even get close to breaking even. The new Iridium is paying subcontractor Boeing (nsye: BA - news - people) 10% of what the old company paid to operate and maintain the satellites. That lowers the break-even point to about 60,000 subscribers, much lower than the million needed by the old company. And that's not a hard number to reach. Already Iridium has a two-year, $72 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense that allows for 20,000 users. That contract alone covers 40% of the operation, he says....
