Wired Classrooms Aren't Enough

We are poised to see change on the University's Central Grounds of a sort we have not seen in more than a century. In August 2001, a U.Va. Board of Visitors committee announced it would invest in the principal buildings occupied by the College of Arts & Sciences on the South Lawn. Combined with private funds, this vision presents us with an unprecedented opportunity to reconsider the spaces in which we teach and learn. These building projects, I believe, must use technology imaginatively to build new models of scholarly community. In so doing, I believe the College can be the engine for an ongoing academic transformation at U.Va, a transformation that will invigorate liberal arts education and ensure its relevance now and in the future....
