PC Vintage: Full-Bodied, Mellow Price

YEAR in, year out, we tech writers are fond of wrapping up our year-end PC buying-guide articles with the same safe statement: "There's never been a better time to buy a new PC." And why not? For years, prices have steadily come down and features have steadily improved. But this year is really something else. You can buy a brand-new, fully equipped, 900- megahertz system — 17-inch monitor, stereo speakers, 20-gigabyte hard drive, fax modem, CD-ROM, Windows XP — for $500. Laptops and PC'S with flat-panel screens command at least another $500, but those are still the lowest prices in history....
