Network Practices Can Endanger Students' Privacy, Registrars' Report Warns

A simple act, like a student's logging on to a computer network, can compromise the confidentiality of private records, warns a report soon to be released by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers. A draft of the report makes a number of recommendations, which include teaching computer-network administrators about privacy guidelines mandated by the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, known as FERPA. The report also calls on colleges to configure computer networks so that log-in information does not link directly to a student's personal records. The finished report is scheduled to be published in mid-November....
