Instead, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) are responsible for reporting illegal file sharing, and both monitor student activity as part of their responsibilities. This past month, however, Sony, not the MPAA or RIAA, became the first group to bring complaints before the university concerning illegal file sharing on campus. According to Assistant Vice Chancellor of Technology Jan Weller, while “the [WU] network is used to access information on the internet and to provide people with a transport system that connects resources,” it is not WU’s responsibility to find those who are using the internet to download copyrighted material....
