Machines to talk intelligently on Web

Suppose you recalled seeing a news article about a new electronic gadget, and you wanted to get in touch with the people quoted in the story. You might plug key words into a search engine to find the article, find quotes, go to the Web sites of companies where the quoted people work and then navigate various links inside those sites -- or consult an online phone directory or call directory assistance -- to find the relevant phone numbers. Now consider an alternative. You tell a search engine you're looking for a story on the gadget and want the contact information for anyone quoted in the article. This time, several computers communicate with each other and then present you with a list of names and numbers....
