http://chronicle.com/free/2001/08/2001081001t.htm NSF Will Link 4 Supercomputers in a Powerful New System for Researchers By FLORENCE OLSEN Supercomputers at four sites across the country will be linked to create the first multisite supercomputing system, a $53-million infrastructure that will be financed by the National Science Foundation. The new terascale system, approved Thursday by the N.S.F.'s board of directors, will be used principally by university researchers who need high-powered machines to handle a growing volume of data and ever-more-complex software. The unusual arrangement will use a 40-gigabit optical network to connect clusters of high-performance computers at four locations -- the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; the San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California at San Diego; the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, operated by the University of Chicago; and the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena....
