Sexual Orientation and Public Policy
SELF-EVALUATIONWrite a mid-term (and final) self-evaluation in which you evaluate your work and learning over the semester. It must be typed, double spaced, and 2-(and no more than) 3 pages. (Don’t get sidetracked into evaluating me as your teacher, as you’ll have an opportunity to do that at the end of the semester). Look—with an honest and critical eye—at your work, learning, effort, reactions, and at changes in your thinking over the semester. Tell me what and how you’ve learned, how you have demonstrated your learning via classroom discussions, projects, the readings, writing and tests. Grade your performance thus far. Be candid —without false humility—in your assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. The following questions should help:A. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED OVER THE SEMESTER? Where did I begin? With what assumptions (about sexual orientation, gender, public policy, etc.) did I enter the class? Where am I now? Do I see things differently? If so, how? If not, why? Do I ask different kinds of questions? Do I read and view the issues more critically and analytically, etc.? What didn’t I learn, what did I resist, how could I have learned even more?
B. HOW HAVE I DEMONSTRATED MY LEARNING OVER THE SEMESTER? How could someone who can’t read my mind know how much and how well I’ve learned over the semester. Have I demonstrated my learning by class discussion, writing, tests, or a team-teaching presentation? In what ways could I have done better?
MIDTERM:What will I do differently in the last eight weeks? What do I want to improve during the remaining weeks of the semester in each area? What specific goals do I have for the rest of the semester?
C. WHAT GRADE DO I DESERVE FOR MY PERFORMANCE SO FAR, GIVEN THE REALITIES OF GRADES?Under my grading system, what grade do I deserve and why? Is the grade based on the quality, or the difficulty of the work, my grasp of the ideas and materials? Does it mesh with the grades criteria for the course?
