Dr. Loretta F. Meeks

Dr. Meeks came to the University of Illinois at Springfield (then Sangamon State University) in 1981. During her career at the university, she has taught several courses in the Teacher Education Program for elementary education majors and in-service teachers, served as director of the Teacher Education Program, and directed student teaching. Her primary teaching responsibilities include course offerings in mathematics and science education. Currently, she teaches and directs two-partnership programs with the community and local school districts--Project Midstate Student Support for Teaching (MSS) and Project Students, Teachers, and Parents (STP). In 1998, Dr. Meeks designed a Teacher Internship Program (TIP) that provides a 100 hour internship for pre-service teachers in the Springfield and Decatur areas. During her tenure at the university, Dr. Meeks has been awarded over ten grants to promote minority access in mathematics, science, and teaching careers.

Dr. Meeks has presented papers and workshops throughout the state and the nation on topics including mathematics and science education, desegregation, learning styles, and programs for at-risk students. She has been selected for various community and academic awards including the Phi Delta Kappa Educator of the Year Award, the Distinguished University Service Award, the Anna B. Waters Community Award, and the University of Illinois's Spencer Award for Public Service.

Dr. Meeks is a native of North Carolina where she began her career as an elementary classroom teacher in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. She received her M.S. degree and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Dr. Meeks is married to Dr. Wendell Meeks, a mathematics consultant for the state of Illinois. They have one son, Alan.
