International Field School in Interdisciplinary Archaeological Research:
Eligibility and NSF Support for Students

Program eligibility requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • For the undergraduate field course, participants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in an undergraduate program.
  • Approval from project directors.

NSF support for undergraduate student participation: Thanks to support from the National Science Foundation Archaeology program and the NSF Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE), we are able to pay most of the costs for participation by 6 undergraduate students (see below). Enrolled students are expected to pay tuition for 4 credits at UIS, and to cover any costs of travel beyond what the project provides.

The NSF project provides accepted participants with the following at no charge to the student:

1.      Roundtrip airfare up to a maximum of $1200 per person.

2.      Group housing in Blaubeuren-Asch, Germany from July 18- August 16, 2007.

3.      Meals during the project period.

4.      Program-related transportation in Germany (vehicles for fieldwork and excursions).

5.      Admission fees to cultural and historical sites visited as part of the program schedule.

Additional costs to participants:

1.      UIS tuition and fees for 4 credit hours.

2.      Cost of acquiring a passport (about $65).

3.      Personal purchases and travel.

For information on registering as a non-degree student at UIS, consult the UIS Admissions web page.

Is this program right for you?

This is a rigorous program of fieldwork which requires general good health. The terrain around Blaubeuren is rugged, with steep hills. Be prepared for physical work including walking over rough surfaces, shoveling, screening, and lifting heavy buckets, and for days spent outdoors.
